Utopia is a name coined by Sir Thomas More from the Greek words meaning no place. Utopia lies in, or comprises, a region that we seem to be able to imagine quite interestingly; and see almost clearly; and certainly work toward; and reasonably for such happiness enact laws leading toward its construction; and even for such an ideal and final end control misguided doubters and dissenters; and finally —

We know that utopia and dystopia have more than subjective differences. Whether a society is good or bad, healthy or poisoned, lies not in rulers' proclamations or their fellow-travelers' praise. Hypothetical criteria for the best of societies should be analyzed; real social and individual consequences must be understood. Absolute and ideal societies, purified by decree and command, are in especial need of the brightest light of history. The Perfectibility of Man is a process, not a State. Odysseus knew the song the Sirens sing; and so do we.
